It turned out the next morning, the lodge was abuzz with activity.

“What’s going on?” I asked Lorie and Keeva during breakfast.

“Tonight is the full moon,” Lorie said with a singsong tone.

I frowned.

Keeva rolled her eyes. “She doesn’t know, Lorie.” She looked at me as if she was a teacher and I was a child. “Every full moon, we celebrate outside. It’s a big deal. You’ll love it.”

A big party under the full moon every month? It sounded heavenly. One more great point for my decision to stay.

Because of the preparations, I didn’t have my usual practice with Fabula, but I got to help out with enchanted flower arrangements to be placed outside. I barely saw Evelyn all day, and I was really dreading it. I wanted to tell her about my decision, and at the same time, I didn’t. I would break the news after the party. Hopefully, the witches would be all drunk and having sex with their beloved humans, and they wouldn’t see us sneaking around the lodge.

If Fabula and the other witches cornered me after Evelyn left with the items, I would tell them that Evelyn had used me to help her sneak into the lodge. She probably knew my mother was a Nightmist witch, and everyone would be so busy wrapping their heads around that, we wouldn’t even see her true purpose for coming here. I would act betrayed—sad and enraged. I hoped they bought it, because otherwise my plan would fail. And I didn’t want to think what the witches would do to me then.

At sunset, we all changed into long black robes with cinched waists, the wide sleeves covering our fingers and the hoods dipping lower to conceal our eyes, and met at the front of the lodge. It had been magically cleared of snow and warmed up because of the cold, and now had many colorful rugs, pillows, tables, tents made of thin black fabric, the flowers arrangements I had helped with, and tiki-styles torches spread around the perimeter. In a corner, an enchanted violin and piano played, filling the air with a low, melodious tune.

The witches lounged on the pillows, forming little groups on the rugs, and the human servants came around, bringing trays of food and drinks and placing them among the witches. Lorie, Keeva, and Dot sat with me and a handful of other witches whose names I didn't remember. Evelyn sat in a distant corner, practically by herself.

At the center of the party, a silver pedestal was placed with an elaborated golden chalice on top. I wondered what that meant, but once some witches got up and started dancing and laughing, I forgot all about it.

Soon, the Dark Order escorted Fabula and Cyrene.

Fabula walked among the witches and smiled at all of us. “It’s the full moon, my darlings!”

The witches cheered.

She raised her arms high. “Our most beloved night of every month.” The shouts became louder. “This will be a night to remember.”

She snapped her fingers and the music grew louder and faster, and all of the witches jumped up and began dancing.
